Toys R Us Has NES Deluxe Set In Stock

We are in the thick of the holiday shopping season. Just one week from today is Thanksgiving and on November 28 is the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday. One of the hottest toys on kids’ Christmas lists this year is the new Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That’s right Mom and Dad; video games have risen like a phoenix from the ashes. If you don’t know what a NES is yet, you soon will!

For those wanting the complete experience, you’ll want to pick up the NES Deluxe Set. It comes with the Nintendo Control Deck (the gaming system), two controllers, the Zapper light gun, R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy), and two Game Paks: Duck Hunt and Gyromite. This set has a suggested retail price of $179.99, but many retailers, including Toys R Us has been regularly discounting it to $139.99. This is a great value, especially when you consider that each item bought separately would set you back about $250.

We have been hearing from some retailers that demand has outstripped supply and that the NES is becoming difficult to find this holiday season. Toys R Us has received a big shipment prior to Thanksgiving, but we’re not sure if they’ll receive any more before Christmas hits in just over a month. In other words, if this is something you’re looking to purchase, don’t wait until the last minute or your holiday season could be Game Over!

If you want to really be a hero this Christmas, don’t forget to pick up a few extra games with the NES. By far the best one on the market is Super Mario Bros. from Nintendo. It’s an epic action game that has the Mario brothers on a quest to save Princess Toadstool. You can read our full review here, but you might also want to consider Kung Fu for the Karate Kid in your family and Pinball for some classic fun. Third party licensees have begun creating games in earnest for the NES, and we’re hearing that Ninja Kid is a fun game from Bandai that’s aimed at the younger gamers out there. If you’re into arcade action Commando might be worth a shot, and early impressions on Ghosts ‘N Goblins are promising. Extra Game Paks (cartridges) will usually cost between $19.99 and $34.99, but sometimes you’ll find them on sale at places like Target.

We wish you the best of luck in finishing (or beginning) your holiday shopping this year. Video games are back, and we believe the NES will deliver fun and exciting titles for the foreseeable future.
