Ed Semrad Proclaims The Goonies II Is Better Than Zelda

In today’s edition of The Milwaukee Journal, Ed Semrad has a lengthy article summing up 1987. Although he thinks Sega had the best overall game of the year with Out Run on the Sega Master System, the rest of the year belonged to Nintendo and its third parties. His highlights of the year go to: Rush ‘N Attack, Ikari Warriors, The Legend of Zelda, Section-Z, Athena, 3-D WorldRunner, Arkanoid, Deadly Towers, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, Double Dribble, Zanac, Top Gun, and Super Pitfall.

However, slipping in just before the clock runs out on this year is The Goonies II and he absolutely loves this one. In fact, he says it deserves an 11 out of 10 – breaking his review scale. He even goes on to say that it’s the NES game of the year and it’s easily better than The Legend of Zelda. Bold words to be sure! We had a favorable review for the game as well, but we don’t agree that it’s better than Zelda.

Notably absent from his favorite games of the year are Castlevania, Rygar, Metroid, and Mega Man. All of these games received very favorable reviews on our site, and shouldn’t be missed. In fact, I’d take off Super Pitfall, Deadly Towers, Athena, and Ikari Warriors from his list and replace them with our choices. Then you get a much better view of 1987! Read on for his reviews of The Goonies II and Jaws.
