Nintendo Account & My Nintendo Replace Club Nintendo

Updated: 10/28/15 @ 11:11pm – Replaced images with English versions and added more detail about Friend Relationships.
At today’s investor meeting, Mr. Kimishima announced that the Nintendo Account is the new account system and My Nintendo is the new membership service that will be a replacement for Club Nintendo. They will link with existing services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and of course your existing Nintendo Network ID. You will be able to look at games on smart devices or PCs and purchase them to download to your Wii U and 3DS.

Games that you have purchased will have special notifications sent to users when new content is available. Special gifts and deals will be sent to your account to keep you in the loop when something is added to any games you own. This seems sort of like the Spotpass notifications already available on the Wii U and the 3DS, except it will now offer notifications on your phone and PC.

A new point system is being introduced with Nintendo Account. You will earn points by purchasing software and also by playing games. Even playing on a smart device will earn points. Additional digital content and goods can be purchased with earned points. In addition, you can earn discounts toward other products.

You can create Friend Relationships across platforms. Are Friend Codes still a thing?
In terms of creating connections among the members, members can make friends with those who enjoy playing games together by establishing “Friend” relationships.
As we place importance on the security of our consumers, a Friend relationship can be established only between two people who know each other and have consented to the relationship. This Friend relationship can be used for software for dedicated game systems and for our smart device applications.
Nintendo will make full use of cloud computing so that data can be shared between home consoles, handhelds, and mobile devices. Save data can be transferred back and forth. This is a most-welcome feature and great to see Nintendo joining the rest of the other videogame hardware manufacturers.

It also appears that you’ll be able to use your Nintendo Account at theme parks and cinemas and in actual stores. What this entails is anyone’s guess, but perhaps you can earn more points by buying Nintendo merchandise at these locations.

My Nintendo will bridge and connect the dedicated game machines to mobile smart devices. It will be free to use and one of the first “games” to use it is Miitomo, a communication app that looks like a cross between the StreetPass Mii Plaza on 3DS and Tomodachi Life. Both My Nintendo and Miitomo will launch in March 2016.
