As we reported last week, the Nintendo 2DS has officially dropped in price by $20 to $79.99. Most retailers carry the red and blue 2DS handhelds that come with Mario Kart 7. It was unknown at the time of the announcement whether or not other versions of the 2DS would be discounted by $20 or not. It appears they have.
A look at GameStop’s retail site shows more options at the reduced price. If you like the Sea Green color, it’s the same $79.99 and comes with Mario Kart. I personally like the look of this system better because I prefer the white front – it gives me fond memories of the original Game Boy.
Probably the best deal out there is the Red 2DS that comes with Yo-Kai Watch installed on the system, which is also reduced to $79.99. Yo-Kai Watch is a Japanese RPG in the vein of Pokémon and isn’t even a year old yet. As such, the game still retails for $39.99, half the price of the 2DS. If you’re remotely interested in this title and are in the market for a new handheld, this is a fantastic price. Plus, the sequels were just announced this week (Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits) and will be hitting retailers this September 30. It hasn’t been this affordable to hop onto a Nintendo portable in a long time.
A word of warning for those shopping for the 2DS, at the time of this writing, Amazon doesn’t sell the system themselves. Instead, third parties are selling them, and in every case I’ve found they are more expensive than other retailers, like GameStop, Target, and Wal-Mart. Remember, it’s a permanent price drop executed by Nintendo, so if you see it higher than $79.99 you are paying too much.
