NPD Sales Data For May 2016

After a scathing month of sales in April, the video game industry rebounded in May thanks to the success of new titles launching throughout the month. In fact, the top four games in the top ten were launched last month, selling almost double in unit sales when compared to last year’s May releases. According to Venture Beat, $528.6 million was spent on new game-related products at retailers, up 4% over last year. Hardware sales were down by 10%, software up by 18% and accessories down 2%. The top ten software titles by revenue for last month were:

  1. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (PS4)
  2. Doom (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  3. Overwatch (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  4. Battleborn (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  6. Minecraft (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  7. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  9. MLB 16: The Show (PS4, PS3)
  10. Dark Souls III (PS4, Xbox One)

My most-played game of May just happens to be the best selling game of the month: Uncharted 4. I had a blast playing through it and am happy to see it has resonated with others as well. It’s not too surprising to see a complete lack of Nintendo games on the list because only Disney Art Academy for 3DS released at retail – hardly a hot seller. Perhaps Nintendo will have better luck this month with Kirby: Planet Robobot.
