Final Splatfest Announced For Splatoon

In a surprising announcement, Nintendo has let the world know that Splatfests are coming to an end in its popular Splatoon game for the Wii U. This will be the sixteenth and final Splatfest event for the game. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Nintendo has held about one Splatfest per month since the game’s launch last year. These events had players choose a side and then battle it out over the course of a day or two with the winning side being awarded extra items that would allow more customization of their character.

For this last Splatfest event, players will pick between Team Callie and Team Marie, the game’s two announcers that have become favorites among the community. It will take place on 2AM PT on Friday, July 22 and will last until 2 AM PT on Sunday, July 24. You will be able to choose your side starting at 7 PM PT on Monday, July 4.

Registered users are receiving this e-mail to vote on which stage they’d like to play.

Those that have previously registered their Wii U to a Nintendo Network ID should have received an e-mail from Nintendo today asking them to vote on which stage they would like to see featured in this final Splatfest. This polling goes from June 30 through July 12, and if you vote multiple times, the last stage that you voted for will count as your final vote.

While no timetable was set in stone, I must admit I was very surprised to hear that Splatfests are coming to an end. I figured they wouldn’t pull the plug on this fun event until long after the NX came out. Perhaps the time and energy that it takes to run the Splatfests is better spent working on a Splatoon sequel? Whatever the reason, it will be sad to see these disappear as they’ve been fun to participate in.

We’ve had 15 inkredible Splatfests so far! While the good times in Inkopolis will continue to roll on, the next Splatfest will be… drumroll, please… the final Splatfest.

Time and time again, we’ve heard you pledge allegiance not to your favorite team choice, but to your favorite Squid Sister. Now, it’s time to show your support in the Squid Sisters Showdown! The theme is: Are you Team Callie or Team Marie?

The showdown begins at 2 AM PT on Friday, July 22, until 2 AM PT on Sunday, July 24. This will be the last Splatfest extravaganza, and we’d like everyone to have a blast!

The last Splatfest will be taking place (almost) at the same time in all regions. However the matchups will be different – the players in Japan will be matched up with those in Japan, and the players in North America and Europe will be matched up with each other. The Top 100 Players will also be tallied and announced separately for Japan region and for North America and Europe regions. Though the results will be collected from all regions, they will be combined together and announced at  the same time.

In-game announcement and voting will start at 7 PM PT on Monday, July 4. Until then, please prepare yourself for the hardest decision you’ll make in your lifetime by doing some soul searching, going on a walkabout, meditating or just reading Squid Sisters fan fiction.
