Pokémon Trading Card Game Website Goes To 1997

I’m impressed with how much the Pokémon Company has managed to stay in the spotlight with the 20th anniversary of Pokémon. If only all game series received this type of treatment. In celebration of its new (or are they old?) Pokémon XY – Evolutions expansion cards, the site has been thrown back in time to 1997. These cards feature some classic monsters via a reinvention of the very first Pokémon trading cards.

The classic site features all of the annoyances we once thought were cool, but now find annoying. There are animated backgrounds, over-the-top grating music playing, special customized cursors, and even a guestbook for you to sign (which is conveniently under construction). I personally love the broken .gif on the lower left side of the page. It seemed like every site had missing graphics somewhere.

The cards should be available at retailers like Toys R Us and GameStop tomorrow, with the rest of the stores getting them in time for the weekend. In the meantime, take a trip back in time and remind yourself how far Websites have come in 20 years.

Don’t forget (like anyone could) that Pokémon Sun & Moon launch in North America on November 18, 2016. For more information, take look at our preview page.
