Old Time Hockey Preview

Do you miss the days of arcade-style hockey games? The Wayne Gretzky 64s and Blades of Steels of the genre? Well, good news! Old Time Hockey is on its way to the Nintendo Switch to fill that void.

Supporting up to four players at once, this couch-competitive game will have you bickering back and forth with your friends in the same room. The game takes place in the late 1970s and features an Exhibition Mode as well as a Campaign where you can follow the story and learn more about the players.

This being an indie game, it’s not going to look amazing or be running the latest graphic engine. Assuming the developers can smooth out some of the frame rate hitches, the game looks promising. This pick up and play style of gaming seems like it would be a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. The PS4 version comes out in March, but the Nintendo Switch game is slated for later in the year.

Old Time Hockey features 5-on-5 arcade hockey gameplay where players will their opponents to submit through rough and tumble aggressive hitting and fighting. You are expected to contest for the puck by taking the body and hitting your opponents by throwing elbows, shoulder checks, cross checks, hip checks, and dirty clotheslines. Timely hits allow your team to go on fire and inflict further damage on your opponents causing them to drop the mitts and fight. That’s right, aggressive hockey is back in town!

Experience hockey the way it was meant to be played – single fights, line brawls, bench brawls, goalie fights, stick fights, knockouts and injuries, molestation of refs – Old Time Hockey has it all! Win the fights and you have fatigued your opponent’s teammates for good thereby giving you a clear advantage to score goals and win the hockey game. Better yet, injure most of your opponent’s teammates and you will win the game by way of a forfeit. That’s Old Time Hockey – I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out!

    • Ready for some Old Time Hockey? Here’s all the advice you need: “take the shortest route to the puck and arrive in ill humor!” and get used to this phrase: “how could the referees have missed that?” Line up bone crushing open ice hits as your opponents scramble for the puck. Choose from a list of ten rugged minor league teams and play with up to 4 players in a local co-op setting.
    • Experience taking a rag-tag hockey team facing a folding season to the championship game to save them. Blue-collared hockey at its best, this season is filled with you needing to navigate the rumours, the pranks, and the realities of a bus-travelling hockey team in the 70s.
    • Unlock new game plus upon completion of the Story Mode in any difficulty and play a full season mode with any of the ten teams in the Bush League. Complete generic progression objectives and unlock collectibles and trophies that were missed or hard to achieve in the regular story mode.

Beer and Hockey go together like bacon and eggs! Old Time Hockey features a Beer Mode input preset and selecting these controls let you play the game with ONE hand so you can hold and drink your beer with the other!

V7 Entertainment Inc., a Vancouver based video game startup, announced today that it is developing Old Time Hockey. A game that harkens back to old-school arcade hockey of yesteryear where blood on the ice is just another day at the rink. 70s afros, big moustaches, no helmets, dirty hits, bench-clearing brawls, goalie fights, stick fights, ref abuse and literally lighting it up– that’s right – aggressive hockey is back in town! Old Time Hockey will release in early 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.

Old Time Hockey is inspired by classic arcade hockey games and sports titles. “Everything from NHL 94, Blades of Steel, to other sports titles like NBA Jam and Tecmo Bowl inspired us. We wanted to recreate that old familiar experience of playing these games on the couch with friends.” says Director Karthik Venkateshan. The game will feature 5-on-5 arcade style hockey gameplay where players will their opponents to submit through rough and tumble aggressive hitting and fighting. From donnybrooks to stick fights, Old Time Hockey delivers an experience straight out of the pages of hockey’s history!

Players will also get to experience a unique Story Mode in Old Time Hockey, something which has never been seen in a hockey video game. “We also developed a hilarious story mode to wrap all the hijinks together. It’s a daring concept to incorporate narrative into a sports game but we think players will get a kick out of it.” Set in the late 1970s amidst a poor economic climate and during the peak of the disco era in the United States, Old Time Hockey underscores the arduous story of a struggling team in the Bush Hockey League.

With various control schemes to choose, players can use arcade 2-button controls to more modern controls. In addition to these familiar controls, a unique “Beer Mode” control scheme allows players to play with one hand and hold their drink in the other!
