Dragon Quest XI Sells Over 2 Million Copies In 2 Days

Well, the sales numbers are in and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is off to a strong start, according to Media Create sales tracking for the period July 24, 2017 through July 30. With only two days of sales reported the game has sold over 2 million copies across PS4 and 3DS consoles. The breakdown shows that the 3DS version sold slightly better with 1,148,888 compared to the PS4 at 950,315. This was expected by us due to the installed base being much larger for Nintendo’s portable. Coming in third for the week is Splatoon 2 with 105,326 in sales, bringing its life to date number up to 753,411 in Japan.

As is usually the case with big title releases, the hardware saw a massive spike in sales as well. The biggest winner was the New Nintendo 2DS LL (XL in America), which sold an impressive 110,963 units, compared with 17,717 the week before that. That’s a huge jump, which was no doubt bolstered by a special edition metal slime version of the hardware. The PS4 jumped from 23,841 two weeks ago to 82,368 last week. Even the Nintendo Switch managed sizable sales (89,314 systems sold) thanks to improved supply for the week. NeoGAF has compiled the following data:

So far for the year the Nintendo Switch is the best selling console in Japan with 1,286,300. PS4 and 3DS are fighting for second place with 995,055 and 936,406 respectively. Even the Vita is managing to hold on over there with 230,725 units shifted this year. It’s pretty much dead in North America.

Another interesting tidbit is that the Nintendo 3DS family of systems is selling better in Japan this year than last year. This is a truly impressive feat for any console going into its seventh year on the market.

As for Dragon Quest XI, it is still scheduled to come to the Nintendo Switch at some point in the future. Square Enix has announced that the game is coming to North America in 2018, but only the PS4 version has been confirmed at this point. That doesn’t mean the 3DS or Switch versions won’t release outside of Japan, just that we’re still waiting on confirmation. They said more details will be shared later this fall.
