Splatoon 2 Best Selling Game For July 2017

July was a good month for Nintendo, and indeed the entire video game industry. There was a time when the summer months were void of any major game releases. This has slowly changed over the last few years, and it’s been an especially busy summer for Nintendo fans with plenty of new releases to keep them entertained.

Of course, Nintendo’s biggest summer launch this year was Splatoon 2 for the Nintendo Switch. It is off to a tremendous start, selling enough to land it in the number one spot for best selling games for the month of July. That’s impressive because the game was only on sale for about a week of reporting for the entire month and does not include digital sales of that title. Nintendo landed two more in the top 10: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came in fifth place and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe landed in seventh. Below is the entire Top 20 games sold for July 2017 by revenue:

Thanks to increased production, more Nintendo Switch systems were available for purchase at retailers during the month of July. It’s obviously Nintendo held some back for the launch of Splatoon 2, and the strategy seems to have worked. The Switch was the number one selling system last month. Because demand still outstrips supply, the Nintendo Switch consistently sells out at retailers nationwide. As soon as they receive a new shipment, they fly off shelves. Although this is impressive, the PS4 still maintains the lead in hardware sales so far for the year. Although, in fairness, the Switch wasn’t on sale until March.

Below is the breakdown for top 10 selling Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS games:

Nintendo Switch

  1. Splatoon 2*
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
  3. Mario Kart 8*
  4. ARMS*
  5. 1-2 Switch*
  6. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers*
  7. Lego City Undercover*
  8. Cars 3: Driven to Win*
  9. Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star*
  10. Just Dance 2017*

Nintendo 3DS

  1. Pokemon: Sun*
  2. Miitopia*
  3. Super Smash Bros.*
  4. Pokemon: Moon*
  5. Super Mario Maker*
  6. Hey! Pikmin*
  7. Mario Kart 7*
  8. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia*
  9. Ever Oasis*
  10. Mario Sports Superstars*

Again, the data doesn’t include digital sales – just retail. Still, it gives a picture as to what’s selling the best per platform. It’s great to see Nintendo back in the charts after a few years of struggling sales with the Wii U. Let’s hope this trend continues and more third parties jump on board with quality titles!
