September 2017 NPD Sales Results

We would have normally received the official NPD sales data for September last week, but there was a glitch in some of the data so the results were delayed until today. We now know that the video game industry had one of its best month ever in September 2017 thanks to a flurry of anticipated games, new hardware, and continued sales of systems like the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

The video game industry saw sales of $1.21 billion, up a massive 39% from one year ago. Hardware represented $316 million (up 34% versus last year). This is mainly due to increased supply of Nintendo Switch systems at retail and the release of the Super NES Classic Edition. Console software contributed $726 million (up 52%) thanks to huge software releases like Destiny 2, NBA 2K18, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Metroid: Samus Returns. Accessories accounted for $150 million (up 9%) with the PS4 Dual Shock 4 being the most sold accessory for the month and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller maintaining the lead as the best selling accessory of the year. The only segment to see a decline was PC software, which added $18 million to the total market (down 20%).

The biggest winner overall for the gaming industry was Destiny 2, selling so many copies that it is now the best selling game of the year. Congratulation to Bungie! The Nintendo Switch had a few games in the top 20 selling games (by dollar, not units) as well:
