October 2017 NPD Sales Results

The results are in for video game sales for the month of October in the U.S. and the Switch is still trucking along. According to the NPD, which tracks retail sales across the nation, it’s the best selling console of the month, although the PS4 is still in the lead for the year. According to Venture Beat, total video game retail came in at $825 million for the month – down 11% from $932 million in October of 2016. Hardware was up 10%, making up $238 million of that pie. Console software contributed $447 million (down 20%), PC software came in at $27 million (down 29%) and accessories brought in $113 million (down 7%).

Officially the best selling game by retail dollar spend was Middle Earth: Shadow of War, which released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It sold over 20% more than the original game did in its launch month. Assassin’s Creed Origins came in at number 2, whereas Super Mario Odyssey charted at number 3. However, both Assassin’s Creed and Shadow of War are counting both retail and digital sold. Super Mario Odyssey‘s digital sales were not counted – had they been it would have been number 1. Not too shabby for only being released for a few days before the end of October!
