Square Enix Eyeing Switch To Bring Out Back Catalog Games

The latest issue of MCV, a UK trade gaming magazine, has a nice article about Square Enix and they talk with Yosuke Matsuda, CEO of the company. He goes into detail about their approaches to the industry, and how they are trying to diversify their library of games and also to bring back catalogue games to newer systems to stoke nostalgia and appeal to a new range of gamers. He’s looking to modernize the experience with enhancements like improved graphics and refined gameplay mechanics.

One of our other big initiatives is to get as many as our past titles available via digital releases. Among the younger generations of gamers, you’ve got lots of people out there who may have heard of our past titles but have never had an opportunity to play them. So we think that program of porting and transferring the older titles over to newer platforms, such as the Switch, is very important. So that people get that awareness of our back catalogue. Just straight ports isn’t cutting it, we need to update those and modernize them to make something that works for modern gamers too.

We’ve seen recent examples with Secret of Mana remake coming out for PS4 early next year as well as Romancing SaGa 2 coming to Switch later this week. What previous game would you hope gets the treatment? I know I’m always excited to play through Final Fantasy II (IV) again as well as Chrono Trigger. Let’s hope!
