Nintendo Continues To Dominate Japanese Sales Charts

Nintendo has continued to dominate the Japanese sales charts this year. For the week of December 18 – December 24, Nintendo once again has the number 1 and number 2 selling pieces of hardware. According to Media Create, the Switch sold 269,684 systems (up from 221,210 the prior week) and the 3DS family of machines sold 80,637 (up from 55,513 the week prior). So far for the year the Switch has sold 3,178,100 – nearly 50% of the entire hardware market for the year, which sits at 6,930,780. For comparison the 3DS has sold 1,625,220 this year and the PS4 has sold 1,742,105 units.

Another milestone was reached when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe crossed the million sold mark in Japan. This makes it the third game to do so in that country alone, joining the ranks of Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2. Out of the top 20 selling games last week, 9 of them were Nintendo Switch titles, 7 were 3DS, and 4 were PS4.

It looks like Nintendo will be ending 2017 on a high note in Japan. We won’t know December sales for the U.S. until mid-January to see how well the Switch sold here for the holidays.
