March 2019 NPD Sales Results Reveal Switch As Top Selling Console

U.S. video game sales results for March 2019 have been shared by the NPD Group, and although there are a few bright spots sales are down across the board. Total video game sales came in at $1.179 billion (down 11% from last March). Making up that number is console sales at $282 million (down 15%), software at $547 million (down 11%), and accessories at $349 million (down 7%).

The Nintendo Switch was the best selling console for March (and the entire first quarter) in both unit and dollar sales. The best selling accessory for the year in units and dollars is the black PS4 Dual Shock 4 controller.

The Division 2 captured the top spot for software sales and marks the sixth highest debut for a Ubisoft game. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice came in second place and is the second highest debuting game for FromSoftware (Dark Souls III keeps its spot on top). MLB 19: The Show came in third and had the highest launch month of sales in its history, marking a new all-time high for a baseball game. Devil May Cry 5 managed fourth place, but couldn’t dethrone DMC 4‘s debut. Kingdom Hearts III is now the best selling game in the franchise, finally beating out the original.

But, what about Yoshi’s Crafted World? Well, it released on March 29 so it didn’t have too long to register sales for the month (a little over a week). It still managed to rank ninth, and that doesn’t count digital sales. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still going strong in fifth place (again, no digital sales included). Here’s the full Top 20 sales for March 2019:
