June 2019 NPD Sales Results
The NPD tracks video game sales in the U.S. and has just released the numbers for June of 2019 and they’re not as great as we’d like them to be. Total video game sales came in at $959 million, down from $1.1 billion a year ago (13% decline). Making up those sales were: hardware ($235 million – down 33%), software ($386 million – down 1%), and accessories and game cards ($338 million – down 7%). It could be a long road ahead for Microsoft and Sony since their next generation systems aren’t scheduled to hit for over a year from now.
The software side of things is a bit better, with only a slight decrease from last year. Thanks to huge hits like Super Mario Maker 2 and Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled, gamers are spending a lot on new games. According to Mat Piscatella, NPD analyst, the former set a new record high for launch month sales of a Mario Maker title. The latter represents the highest launch month total in Crash Bandicoot history.
