July 2020 NPD Video Game Sales Results

Total video game industry sales are up 32% for July of 2020 when compared to the previous July, according to the NPD Group. Data and analysis courtesy of Mat Piscatella. Overall, $3.6 billion was spent across the video game industry versus $2.7 billion last July. Both accessories ($170 million) and software content, which includes physical games, subscriptions, full digital games, and DLC ($3.2 billion) were up 34% year-over-year. Hardware sales came in at $166 million, down 2% from last July’s $170 million. Once again the Nintendo Switch was the best selling system for the month in both revenue and units sold.

The top 20 best selling game in the U.S. for July 2020 were:

Ghost of Tsushima for the PS4 is the fastest selling title from developer Sucker Punch and has achieved the 4th highest launch month dollar sales in U.S. history for a Sony published title. It’s now sitting at the 5th best selling game for 2020.

Paper Mario: The Origami King set a new launch month sales record for the series, and that’s just counting the physical copies sold (Nintendo doesn’t report digital sales). It more than doubled the sales of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on GameCube and also outsold the previous record holder, Super Paper Mario on the Wii.
