August 2020 NPD Video Game Sales Results

The sales results for the U.S. video game industry for August of 2020 are in and the story is that video games are selling better than ever. For the month consumers spent $3.3 billion, that’s 37% more than August of 2019. For the year the industry is up 23% year-over-year.

On the hardware side of things the Nintendo Switch has a massive month of sales, mostly thanks to there finally being some supply in the chains. In fact, the Switch set a new August hardware dollar sales record, even beating the 2008 record holder, Wii. The number of Switches sold this August versus last August more than doubled!

As for software, $2.9 billion was spent there for a 37% increase over last August. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is once again the top selling Switch game, but if you look at the entire top 20 for the month you’ll see that Nintendo managed to nab half the spots! Keep in mind that Nintendo doesn’t report digital sales like most of the other companies do, which means that some of these games could have ranked even higher. Looking strictly at the Nintendo Switch top 10 list, Zelda: Breath of the Wild has ranked in the top 7 best-sellers for 42 consecutive months and is now the 10th best-selling game on Nintendo platforms in U.S. tracked history. Awesome!
